Sawyer mini water filter. - bigpaul - 14 January 2014

any of you who watch "armoured cockroach" on youtube will have seen these on his latest video. after a bit of research online I decided to get one, it arrived today 24 hour delivery from ordering it, in a neat little package. anyway the advertising says it will filter 100,000 GALLONS-that's like about 30 years use. its not cheap, its £29.95 +p&p £5.50=£35.45 but that's for ParcelFarce tracked delivery. anyway here's the link to the website: http://sawyereurope.com click on water filters, then scroll down the L/H side and click on SP128 Sawyer mini. don't be put of by the Europe bit its posted from the Wirral, Merseyside.

They do a shit hot one, nano technology, same kind of filter used in a dialysis machine. Lot more money, but I've seen one and they're fucking brilliant. Let me know how this one goes, if it's any good I may treat myself to this one (one million gallons)

There's a better one apparently, from the same company, but I can't find the details of that - so maybe I just made it all up?

RE: Sawyer mini water filter. - bigpaul - 14 January 2014

I haven't found that one yet, the mini one seems to be the cheapest-you can get one sent over from the states as its an American product, there is one on Ebay for £25 inc postage-if you can wait for the delivery, the squeeze bottle is the original one(the mini is a NEW type) but that's about £55 !!!!

Mortblanc told me you can buy them in the states for $20 (which is about £14?) but isn't that always the case??

RE: Sawyer mini water filter. - BeardyMan - 14 January 2014

Aye. Pretty much standard unfortunately.

Bring it along to the meet if you don't mind - I'd be interested to see just how big it is in person (the filter that is!) before I buy one.

100,000 gallons - you can't go wrong for that price!

its tiny, probably fit in a coat pocket and it only weighs 2 ounces.

I'm quite interested in that as well. Have just been on Amazon.com and you can get a set of 4 of them sent across from the US on 5-6 day delivery for about £63.00, so that like £16.00 each which is really good value!!

The only question I have for BP is how secure/safe do you think the two ends of the filter are? ie: are they likely to snap or break off easily when backed away in the depth of a backpack?

The only negative feedback on amazon seems to be about the bags, but thats not a big issue, as you can use it with most other bottles anyway....

RE: Sawyer mini water filter. - bigpaul - 14 January 2014

I haven't used it yet but it looks pretty robust I don't think you'd snap anything on it, not sure how strong the bags are but you can use any old pop bottle on it instead and we all know how many of them their are lying on the side of the road everywhere!!

RE: Sawyer mini water filter. - Devonian - 14 January 2014

One more question, the 'Lifesaver' bottles have to be kept wet once you open them and use them, else they are useless.

Does the same apply to these or can they be left to dry up until next needed?

RE: Sawyer mini water filter. - TheFalcon - 14 January 2014

Cheers BP im going to get one of these for sure

RE: Sawyer mini water filter. - Mortblanc - 14 January 2014

The MINI is being issued to special ops units as a standard item. It is not going to fall apart in your pack. It requires no special treatment, permanent priming or any such preparation. Just screw it onto a 2L pop bottle, squeeze and drink.
