Solar Storm - Prep Girl - 28 December 2011

Will be interesting to see what gets disrupted.

Massive solar storm 'could knock out radio signals' over next three days, warn scientists
Skywatchers will be hoping for clear skies from today because particles from a recent solar storm will slam into Earth and produce amazing Northern Lights, or auroras.

On the downside, experts expect radio blackouts for a few days, caused by the radiation from the flare – or coronal mass ejection (CME) – causing magnetic storms.

The flare is part of a larger increase in activity in the Sun, which runs in 11-year cycles. It is expected to peak around 2013.

RE: Solar Storm - Nemesis - 28 December 2011

"Scientists believe it could damage everything from emergency services’ systems, hospital equipment, banking systems and air traffic control devices, through to “everyday” items such as home computers, iPods and Sat Navs."

So I take that to mean solar will be killed that worries me, my solar plays a big part in my shtf plans, I think I might bury two panels and a controller in a plastic drum.

This is a real event heading our way we need to get a better understanding of it all.

It's atill a while away. This is the start of the activity, loss of radio signals, some fried equipment but nothing major. It will build up over the next year to its peak. EMP proof everything and you will be fine.

I think it is called global warming and is because we all have SUVs or something.

This is a cracking site for aurora prediction. Smile

I wonder?

The black hole of Britain! Mystery as heating, doorbells and showers stop working in sleepy village (near 'top secret' military base)

RE: Solar Storm - Jodansgang - 5 January 2012

This was my "high on the list" scenario for this year. Love the link Jan Mayen, many thanks and hello from another newbie. Very interesting PG very, very interesting.
Shall have to get myself an old fashioned wind up alarm clock for when all the digital stuff goes down.

If you read the article it was localised. The workman moved his van up the road and it then worked. I'd have been out marking the borders to find out where it was myself.

RE: Solar Storm - Prep Girl - 6 January 2012

Yes it was localised , but it has happened in other parts of Britain, along with power cuts and strange power drainage, happened here before Christmas, my lights dimmed and my clothes dryer all but stopped, only lasted a minute and just a few days after we had a total power cut that no one can explain? and several times since my TV has gone blank then comes back? it's all a bit odd?

RE: Solar Storm - Scythe13 - 6 January 2012

Time to look into Faraday cages!

Metal frame work throughout the house, and you are EMP proof, as long as you ground the cage. A cable into the ground should be plenty.

RE: Solar Storm - Skean Dhude - 6 January 2012

There are so many devices now that can cause interference. If I found something as localised as this I would suspect someone has anew device. Find it and shut it down.

Be a while imo before solar storm impact anyone but amateur radio.
