Where would you start rebuilding? - Scythe13 - 24 June 2014

Here's a fun one.

The concept of rebuilding society has not been mentioned too much recently. Previous debates of BOL's and the alike have arisen, but not a huge amount on the ideal locations for people to start rebuilding society.

A city would be too far from agricultural areas, and a rural area would make transport of goods and growth of the area more difficult.

What kind of location do you think would be best to help rebuild society? Near lakes, streams, canals, or other waterways, or would you prefer rail tracks, roads, or what? Near a flood plain for the fertile soil, but high enough from the flood plain so that flooding would not be an issue? Mountainous area for security? Commendeer an old castle for security? What would you be looking for in an area to rebuild society?

rebuilding "society" will take a long time, decades maybe even a century if everything has been reduced to a basic level, first it would be "subsistence" farming-only growing what you can to feed yourself, large surpluses wont be available for a long time. forget cities, they will be uninhabitable and of no use to anyone, people-if they have any sense- will be living near where the food is produced so transporting wont be an issue-everything will be local.

In all honesty, rebuilding society is not something I have any real interest in, I would anticipate being in full 'selfish' survival/self-preservation mode.

Rebuilding society is where the wanabee future politicians will start appearing, together with other large numbers of individuals with their own personal interests and that is where things will start to go wrong again.

The thought that any person will determine when and where civilization will spring up or continue, or that any thing that happens will end the existence ???

Almost every one of the major cities in England predate and/or survived the fall of Rome! Colchester was already there when the Romans arrived. Constantine was crowned in York and London just celebrated its 2M birthday.

And you have several villages that date their existence back to the late stone age, early iron age and the original Celtic invasions. There's even a cave man over in Cheddar that still has DNA walking about on the green.

Civil wars, invasion, famine, plague and pestilence, the cities and communities are still there.

Cities grow up based on the needs of communication and commerce and they do so in spite of the folk that don't like crowds.

before now, we didn't have the technology we have in the 21st Century, so if things go TU humans have further to fall!!! what would most people do without oil, petrol, diesel, electricity, computers, food deliveries to the shops, "coffee to go" and all the other "essentials" of modern life, probably curl up and die!

look at whats already their, follow the river severn from bristol up town and village after town and village.
why , fresh water , travel . the rivers were the roads of yesterday, m5/ /river severn same route, m4/ thames same route.

if you had to start fresh you would pick the same places for the same reasons .

RE: Where would you start rebuilding? - bigpaul - 25 June 2014

the rivers aren't maintained like they used to be, a lot of them are silted up.

RE: Where would you start rebuilding? - Sunna - 25 June 2014

the river severn is still a working river with a number of large quarries along it also a large tourist trade.
from brum and worcester you can use the canals and get to most of england.

but it helps if your a strong swimmerWink

a lot of the rivers in Somerset were silted up that's why they had all that flooding. some roads in North Devon have fallen into the rivers and blocked them, the roads were eventually rebuilt but this wont happen post SHTF, there is one big obstacle to anyone from "outside" trying to get into Devon, its called the River Exe and you have to find the nearest bridge across it, if the bridges aren't maintained they will collapse into the EXE, a lot of them have weight restrictions on them for this very reason.
