Hi Bobby, welcome to the forum. Have a look around and get to know us. We're all very well mannered...except NR. But we still love him.

What's your survival and prepping experience?

Thanks guys. I've been having a good read over the last few week, all very interesting and helpful. Some of you seem pretty hard core ! I'm not that into it as yet, but I've had it in the back of my mind for many many years now and can see its time I got moving on this, so I'll be hitting you with plenty of questions.

Cheers

It's cool to be at your own level. Some things seem really hardcore to me, like storing loads of water and the alike. But that's only because I live in an area that is water-full.
Other things like storing food I understand and agree with (not that I disagree with water storing).
I'm not massively into protecting currency and that kind of thing either. I make a reasonable wage, so it's not a huge effector for me.
When it comes to protecting those that I love and hold dear.....BRING ON THE EXTREME!!! haha

All the things I want to do are thing that I find fun to do anyway, like camping in the middle of nowhere with a 12 mile hike home. I would have done that whether into survivalism or not. Other fun things include; build my own specialised BOV and BOL. But there other things are a little boring, but still worth doing (storing toilet paper for example).

Each person comes in at the level they are okay with and we accept that fully. Also, if you're like Binary Ninja (000111010) or myself, you are limited by location factors. If you live in an upstairs flat, you can't build a celler under the floor. Or if you live in a rented room, you can't build a diesel storage system or start setting up solar panels on the roof :'(

So we all come as we are and do what we can.

Small steps lead to big preps.

You sound in a similar position to me Scythe, money is coming in ok at the moment, but it's getting tougher every year. This is one of the reasons I've started this (as a kind of hedge) against a run away inflation which I believe is coming. I'm also stuck where I am (on an Island) but I think this is probable a good thing. There's plenty of water and today my Berkey filter finally arrived which is great.

RE: SCRAP " outside looking in" - Jodansgang - 10 January 2012

Hi there, welcome Bobby. Like you, I am relatively new to this. However we have lots and lots and lots of camping experience (last year we "wild" camped every time we went out!) Just before Christmas I started prepping for what still feels like an imminent redundancy and, being the sole earner in a family of 5, my primary concern was food storage. Every week, for 5 weeks upto Christmas, instead of just the weekly, we bulk bought dried food (pasta/rice/dried fruit/nuts) and tinned food (tuna/beans/potatoes/veg) etc......you get the idea ! In addition to this we have, this past year, been into our "food fo free" (Collins Gem Guides do a lovely little book) and as a result of this we now know the geographical location of all fruit and nut bearing plants within a one mile radius of our home. We live in a major Northern city so competition is always stiff, jobs are becoming increasingly sparse and life, at times, can be quite vicious. Since joining this forum I believe I have increased our chances of survival by watching other members bounce ideas off one another, by being active in posting replies and reading previous posts. Finding Survival UK was probably the best start to the new year a man could have. Hope you continue to enjoy the site as much as I do.

Hello Jodansgang, I hope your still in work, I know how tough its getting. I work for myself and its a bit dog eat dog out there. Its amazing how much room all this food takes up ain't it ! I've built a large storage area in the garage but I'll be surprised if there's enough room in there for a years stock for the 5 of us. With those fruit/nut trees you mention, don't you think they'd be cleaned out quite quickly once a stiuation hits ? Anyway keep it going you'll get there mate.
