Technology - NorthernRaider - 22 October 2015 There is no denying that modern technology is a vital communications and information system for preppers, and many of us embrace large parts of the technological revolution, Two way radios, GPS, Digital phones and ............. COMPUTERS. Recently Light Speed has been raving about a tiny radio thingy that cost 3 quid its absolutely basic and I understood about 1% of what he was saying. but it did get me thinking about the ubiquitous computers most of use daily to access the interweb, check international news, buy stuff , chat with other preppers. But equally nearly all of us are more than aware on the unreliability of normal windows / Ubuntu / fire fox etc PCS, viruses, scams, operating system faults, freezing, clashing programs. All of which are a vulnerability to our preps and a frequent source of grumbles from us. So I thought could any of the communities young techno geeks recommend or suggest a SIMPLE and ULTRA BASIC, RELIABLE , tough and simple to use stripped down bare bones PC with a basic operating system that cannot be buggered up by malware. A self contained device than can surf the web, send E mails, store files type device that is the sort of basic tool you would want to set up in a remote African village that is rugged but simple enough for them or US in a post SHTF UK? RE: Technology - Mortblanc - 22 October 2015 Using one right now. It's called a laptop. Operates on windows 10, is wireless, reaches anywhere in the world off wifi signal, will recharge off solar. It will even work off portable wifi through my phone. It is protected from malware by the security program installed specifically to protect the system. My favored system is Webroot. I am using it to communicate with you from 5,000 miles away and I just talked to a friend in a small village in Tanzania yesterday. He was using Tap-a-Talk on his smart phone. Any good computer shop can set you right up. RE: Technology - Lightspeed - 22 October 2015 RE: Technology - NorthernRaider - 22 October 2015 LS someone mentioned Chromebooks but I'm not familiar with them, but your research into low cost simple rugged almost idiot proof transceivers made me think there could be a place for a similar device as a Prepper PC. Utterly rugged, very basic, screen, keyboard, a device that does E mail, searches the web and allows access to forums and shops, perhaps with a basic word system, simple basic operating system nothing more, perhaps even 12vdc?? ideally the fixed basic operating system would be unchangeable so it could not be hacked, hijacked or infected like proper pcs and laptops are. No video, no music, no audio, no extraneous junk, just a basic prepper comms pc perhaps even with its battery pack using conventional lithium btteries like AA or CR123s?? RE: Technology - Auto - 22 October 2015 RE: Technology - NorthernRaider - 22 October 2015 Hi auto, no not quite what I meant, Imagine a standard laptop say 13 inch screen, keyboard, 2 usb ports one for mouse, and for god knows what. powered up the device would have a basic word processor, a basic browser to search the web and an e mail system. just the absolute very basics to enable preppers to reach out if TSHTF and basic comms could be maintained RE: Technology - Straight Shooter - 22 October 2015 If there is such a product. i would like one ! very interested !
