Wikipedia Shutdown! - Scythe13 - 17 January 2012 I wasn't sure whether to post this in the normal or controversial news section. If you look at what happens in many dictatorships and especially during the creation of a communist state/country, control of information is a HUGE part of the transition. The government takes away the right to defend yourselves, they control the information in and out of a country, and they have complete control of passage of people in and out of the country. Passports are the control in and out of the country. Something like 80% of Americans don't have passports! The right to protect yourself is a part of the constitution, but during Katrina, many people were forced away from there homes and arms taken away from them! This is the part where information get's controlled. I know it's not going to stop any of us working, but it is a big sign!!! Wikipedia (the English language part of it) will be shut down at the end of today in protest to the American government's latest legislation ideas!!! http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/English_Wikipedia_anti-SOPA_blackout RE: Wikipedia Shutdown! - Skean Dhude - 17 January 2012 Scythe, It is being shut down by the owner to make a protest about the US governments proposed communications bills. . It's going to be down 24 hours only. The bills are rapidly losing support from even the dimmest bulbs in the US government RE: Wikipedia Shutdown! - Scythe13 - 17 January 2012 (17 January 2012, 17:55)Skean Dhude Wrote: Scythe, Thanks to The Patriot Act, those bills can be reinterpreted by the president as he sees fit. It's one of those things that would be on a time line, like the one for the Jews living in Germany before WW2. Passports stamped. Seperate schools, business right removed, ghettos, death camps, WW2. It'll be a turning point if it does happen though. RE: Wikipedia Shutdown! - Tartar Horde - 17 January 2012 another small erosion of rights and civil liberties. In former times they burned books, in our time the WWW is our library, so now they want to burn our virtual books.
