Some years ago I came across a website http://www.free-energy-info.co.uk and it has an immense amount of info with regard to offgrid. However it is somewhat technical, and a little bit provocative (?), but interesting. If you log on to the site it may be worth while scrolling down to Chapter 15 Building A Generator and clicking on to the article there - you can download the chapter, it is 29 pages in total.
Techie but it beats pedalling if you can get it to work.
