You beat me to it TL, I dont quite get what our new friends point is, I for one have no time for coops or collectives.

RE: UK collective retreats - Skean Dhude - 8 July 2012

No society is perfect. Heard of tribal leaders, witch doctors, etc. Some people will rise to the top and others will be dominated in every society.

The nearest we get to true democracy imo is the Swiss way, with them voting on everything and their political leaders simply running shop while the public decides the way forward. That is why they are not in the EU but at the same time their society is different from ours. They follow the rules. They go to bed at 2230 and don't flush toilets after 2200 in flats, etc. We have lost that respect.

RE: UK collective retreats - NorthernRaider - 9 July 2012

I was watching the news on tv whilst I waiting my turn for a CT scan this morning, and it focused as usual on Londonabad, John terrys race hate case, the broken viaduct on the m4 , some tosser running with a torch, bankers bonuses, lawyers fighting europe.
And it got me to thinking, I was going to write an article about " what types of people and skills a post SHTF prepper community woyld EVENTUALLY need" and it suddenly dawned on both my working brain cells that its not a matter of what skills preppers need in their PA society but its what we dont need. Watching the news I realised that 99% of the city people being featured we just did not need after the fall.

News reporters
TV cameramen
Editors
Lawyers
Cops
Social Workers
Estate Agents
Bus & Train drivers ( unless they can operate a steam loco)
Shop workers
Nearly all council workers
Most teachers and lecturers cept those with specialised subject skills
Footballers
Coaches
Groundsmen
WAGS
Hair dressers
Beauticians
The list goes on and on but the skills that will be needed after a collapse are nearly all the old fashion tradional skills and crafts
Farmers
Cobblers
Barrel Makers
Blacksmiths
Engineers
Knitters, sewers, weavers, habidashers
Various smiths ,( wood, iron, boats, ropes, leather etc).
Odd isnt it the distinction between productive useful members of the ideal community are in the main of rural backgrounds, and the least useful least valuable etc are in the main from an urban background.

RE: UK collective retreats - bigpaul - 9 July 2012

no not surprising really, most urban areas were set up for people to come together to earn money, they are totally unnatural environments, where all the food, services etc. have to be brought in from the outside, one break in the system and the whole thing falls apart.

NR,

You are talking rubbish there. You state; Nearly all council workers.

Which ones are of any use at all? Any council type work could be done by our local village idiot.

RE: UK collective retreats - NorthernRaider - 9 July 2012

Oooooof Smile

RE: UK collective retreats - bigpaul - 9 July 2012

apart from the bods in the office we dont have any council workers down this way, all the actual physical work is done by outside subcontract firms!
