RE: cold weather gear. - Mortblanc - 29 November 2013

The most important planning tip for a first time cold weather outing is "Don't get yourself into a place you can not get out of in the middle of the night!"

The availability of quick transport out of the frozen hell is what separates uncomfortable campers from the news headlines.

Every person reacts to cold differently. Comfort to one person is sure death from hypothermia to another. You do not know until you are in the middle of the situation how you will fare. Take more than you think you will need and if you do not use it there is no foul.

Better to have it and not need it than to be found dead in your tent by the rescue unit.

And it is very difficult to sleep while one is standing by a fire, hopping around, trying to keep the circulation going in their feet.
