I was thinking much the same thing only with Bourbon as the object of desire.
If you mentioned Harveys' Bristol Cream around here the general reaction would be "what's that?"
Followed by "People really drink that stuff?"
I live on a street known as the "Bourbon Trail" where we have a chain of fine distilleries that have been producing their wares since back when we were still British.
Here we crave the triple run sour mash product aged in charred oak for a few years.
Come to think of it, since it is the middle of the night and I can't get to sleep I think I will refill this half empty tumbler of water and alter my state of being.

Good sour mash is a viable substitute for whisky.
