It is only a matter of time before we are hit. Luckily the timescales are such that our species may not even exist when it does.

It is just one reason we need to get off this planet.

That's an interesting find there Mike.

Glad you came back!

Do you know if it's passing will effect any kind of solar activity (shadowing the sun/radiation), knock out some satelites, maybe even cause the tides to screw up a bit?

So it'll be 17'000 miles away. That's about 14 times further away than the moon is.

when you think that the eastern seaboard of the USA is about 3,000 miles away and the whole of the country is some 3,000 miles wide, 17,000 miles is a helleva wide miss!

All it takes is something on it's journey to alter its trajectory slightly, the snooker ball effect...
How will earths gravity affect it on its journey?
Will our moons gravity affect it?
Do we believe them that it wont hit? After all, governments not the most truthful...
wait and see wait and see..

Maybe that's the 2012 prediction!!! [que eerie sound effects]

But in fairness, if films have taught me anything, it's going to hit America. The Congo never has asteroids. It'll be New York, Hollywood (right on the Hollywood sign), or "Parts of Latin America". Granted films are probably not the most reliable source of information.

An asteroid that size would already have had its course changed by our main gravity well the sun. Even the earth will make little difference to it and its mass is so small that it won't make any difference to us. Now maybe the satellites it passes close to may be pulled off position. Depends on how close they get.
