Freecycle - Unwanted goods for the price of pickup

so our cat threw up all over our telly recently and broke it, leaving my mum really bored and me chuckling cause i only use my computer for entertainment, and we've been looking at cheap and free ways to get a new telly.

following a recommendation we found a website called freecycle, where people put their unwanted goods up for free, all you got to do is go and pick it up! i've found all sorts of things i wouldnt expect for instance 2 local listings of tinned food, all within usebydate and lots and lots of empty jars all with lids!...as you can imagine these things are great for preppers on a budget as all you gotta pay is however much petrol it takes to go and pick it up!

I used to be a member of my local free cycle...Offered 8 shelves. I sent my fella 5 miles each way for these shelves..He came back with 6 peices of warped wooden large slats. offered loads of kids toys, sent my fella 3 miles each way, he came back with an Asda plastic bag full of broken dolls with hair cuts and Macdonald toys, we did however get a half decent tumble dryer, In my opinion, sometimes the cost of fuel outweighs the shite you can get from free cycle. Plus when I put stuff on, there was always the same scroats begging for the items I put on, I had 10 items on one day, 6 the next, 3 the next and the same folk asking for all the items. some say they get the items and flog them on Ebay, Just be weary on freecycle, some folk can't be bothered taking their stuff to a skip and offer it on there!

had some good stuff off freecycle, also got rid of a lot of good but unwanted stuff, its great for water butts and stuff like that.

cheers for the advice prepaday, ive found some really cool stuff on there so far, some tellys and such like, which is what we need lol, im just gonna plan to get a bunch of different stuff all in one trip

My local one is infested with wanted ads; wanted xbox,flat screen TV, laptop etc
Did manage to get a composting bin & a dog basket from it
Trying to give stuff away has been a pain due to no shows
Its a good concept though

No shows do my head in, I struggled down the stairs with a large bookcase, gave it a clean, left it in my hall, had to climb over it every time I went up the stairs... She didn't turn up, so another person said they would come the day after, left it in the hall as I didn't wanna go back upstairs with the bookcase, The other person didn't show up, this happened 3 times in 3 days, Gave it to the charity shop in the end.
And it happened a few times after that. Got sick of receiving crap and no shows, don't bother with it anymore.
And I'll tell ya what grates me....
I received a leaflet from the council saying wheelie bins to be emptied every 2 weeks instead of one as they want to lower land fill, you ever been to the tip?
The amount of really good stuff that gets tipped, I saw guy ready to throw a large green and brown ceramic PLANT POT AWAY, I asked for it, he gave me it
I've looked in the skips on many occasion and almost cried at the stuff that gets thrown, I would gladly go there every day with a van, every car that came, scan the car, watch the people who tip and ask for their good stuff, you could open a second hand shop and make a b omb! I could save the council at least £64 a day, that's what they say it costs them a ton to put stuff into landfill.

Up to very recently a local chap collected old gas cylinders from our tip and turned them into Chimneas, BBQs, wood burning stoves, seats etc etc, made a good living until the jobworthworths at the council stopped him, can have people creating employment now can we ?

Another guy got a free fully working, ready to use Honda 50 Monkeybike circa 1970 from the tip, he still rides it most days!!

Makes me fecking sick, They complain about trying to save money when I/others are more than willing to take stuff away and save it from going into landfill, I put my rubbish into the 5 diff wheelie bins they have given me, now I have to have full bins sitting in my drive for a fortnight. I tell you what I would even do...Give council £64 a ton, and I would save them £64 a ton, there- for they save £120..I could do this 5 days a week and save them shit loads a year...Fecking health and safety laws though..grrrrr If I wanna risk a cut taking stuff then I will, it's my fecking hand, I would even sign a disclaimer !

I phoned my council and asked them how much they would be reducing my council tax by, it rattled em cos they could not answer when I pointed out that we already pay for THEM to collect, sort and dispose of our waste so if we are now to do it why should we be paying.
But sadly Durham County Council is ran by left wing scum and socialists who thing home owners only purpose in life is the give them money to waste. most councils could sack at least 50% of their staff and not affect important services.

Our local council has just sent out a survey. It seems they need to engage more with the community and not just increase taxes.

So we have two choices;

1) Should we reduce benefits and help to the poorest and the disabled in society and save 2.6M
2) Should we increase council tax by a small amount.

In the comments section I suggested they were ripped off by their consultants because the local school would have come out with better suggestions and how the consultancy was a farce.

Not one word about cutting lesbian outreach workers and football coordinators, reducing expenses or actually cutting costs. Scum, no different from central government.
