The pop of north east England is falling overall, and the demographics (?) are changing, more and more young northerners are buggering off darn sarf or leaving for Canada, Oz, NZ etc, and more and more people are moving into the three large urban zones on the coast (Tyne, Wear,Tees) thus depleting rural areas of fresh blood.

Note that more and more wealthy or affluent types like SD and Wet & Cold are moving into the inland rural areas especially chasing decent sized south facing properties with enough land to be a bit more self sufficient. So whilst rural state owned primary and secondary schools shrink alarmingly in places, the private schools are not suffering as bad as the their southern equivalents are doing.

I think that in time ( and only as an approximation) North Yorks, Durham, Northumberland and Cumbria are going to become Englands version of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming etc with an entrenched establish self reliant mentality among the citizens living there ( but without the benefits the merkins have)
