I know what you mean.

However, my prepping has never been used in anger either but I want it to work in an emergency.

I'm guessing though that like me emergency that needs a phone is not TEOTWAWKI emergency but rather you ran out of petrol or, worse case, phoning an ambulance. In which case it may end up as a poor copy of a phone. Not trying to teach you to suck eggs here.
