It seems a lot of you are clued up and can make things from bits and bobs lying around the house.
This artical says it's going to cost millions to make the machinery needed to convert Methane into electric...
Anyone out there good with their chemistry?

simple combustion love, just like an engine ^^

put some methane into a chamber with a sparkplug, compress it, the sparkplug ignites, which sets off the combustion of the methane, which makes a force which turns the engine, connect engine to generator, essentially a spinning magnet surrounded by coils of copper.

simples Big Grin

it would cost millions to do it on a commercial level though, e.g. providing mega watts of energy to power whole villages and towns and cities Tongue

from a personal perspective its doable, although it would be a pain to get methane, i guess the best way is to poop in a big sealed pit, and collect the gas given off, you could also use the dried poop as fertiliser as well Smile
oh and commercially they'd purify it as well, but on a small scale i cant see a pressing need for doing that, although you may need to perform slightly more regular maintenance on your makeshift methane genny
heres a couple of related links

essentially biogas is a great alternate/supplementary energy system for a prepper, runs off waste product, gives you a place to get rid of your poop and such like, will run what you need it too as well, and its well documented for smaller scale projects Smile plenty of guides about! personally i reckon if your in a position to do so, you want to be using wind, solar and biogas, as well as having a petrol genny in case you find any petrol ^^

there are even projects like this happening

woops forgot the other link
