Just checked the USGS site and the amount of siemic activity appears the same as it always is , hardly any variation its just the usual ring of fire stuff, but for the sake of fairness please be so kind as to prove the figures and facts you so kindly offer us about the sudden change in vulcanism cos I cannot find anything substansive ?
Point 8 quakes are fairly common BTW but they are usually so deep they dont create sufficient P or S waves to cause major onshore damage. As for the south sea islands they get hit all the time because in many parts the islands are only one or two meters above sea level.
