Wouldn't like to try and power an array of high pressure sodium bulbs on just a solar setup though.
so dont go for HPS, you dont need that sort of spectrum for general growing, its got a great light spectrum for flowering a cannabis plant, and a high output
my view? go CFL...you can build a cabinet that you can run off of batteries! ventilation holes in it, no need for fans to force the air through :) coat the insides with flat white paint (most reflective paint u can get) use warm white 40w bulbs, you can have 3 compartments for different vegetables or whatever you wanna grow (being a prep site im assuming food crops) you can use various containers as pots, anything from simple half litre coke bottles to larger plastic pots :)
you wanna do it hydro? almost the same setup but with an ebb flow system in the bottom, perlite mix will work fine (good aeration and drainage) vermiculite helps for nutrient retention, mix your nutes in your water, set up some timers
you wanna do it aero?...that im not sure about xD...but im led to believe its a very good way of growing, you can put a bunch of plants all along some pvc piping and you essentially atomise the water and the nutrients and spray it along the tubing, but im not very saavy with this method :P
regardless of all this ive been interested in recreating eco systems in odd enviroments, like emulating british country sogginess in a desert building :) so i shall probably be pursuing a line of "grow cupboards" but with an emphasis on growing reasonable amounts of food in a short time span and limited space, who knows, maybe im onto a winner there xD anyways im off to think of ideas and draw up some designs/research specific things relating to different food crops
