The sheeple motivated

So they gather to moan about the proposed site for Hinkley C.
The idiot sheeple would rather hug trees than have power.

A classic example of sheeple stupidity over commonsense.
Here we are (a minority group in itself) worried about power because we realize that very soon the lights will be dimming all over the UK and these idiots want nothing to do with it.

We need alternative power quickly to replace the many clapped out soon to be closed MUCH MORE POLLUTING power stations BUT
they would rather see us brown out into . . . . .nothing.

I just wonder how many of them will protest when they can't get their dole checks or other benefits as the DSS computers are down through lack of power.

I have to agree with THEM on this, i dont trust Nuclear Power ....i think alternative power is the way to go..wind turbines, wave power, solar panels etc.etc......nuclear power has too many problems, not just the power but accidents like what happened in Russia and Japan, then there is the waste which has to be got rid of and is still volatile for thousands of years, some of which is moved by rail through our cities in the dead of night, a rail crash or derailment dosent bear thinking about. no, i would rather have the lights out than have nuclear power, thats one of the things i am prepping for-no power!!
I have to say that we moved from Glastonbury when TPTB announced the building of Hinckley C, we lived about 12 miles STRAIGHT DOWNWIND of Hinckley and we lived on the ONLY high ground between us and it, if any serious accident happened we were in direct line of any fallout, there were other reasons why we moved but that was the main one.

Paul , I'm no eco hippy green thing, but to be honest I would rather live in a world with interupted power supplies than nuclear power. I woul;choose to live in a society where only schools and hospitals get uninterupted power, most Brits can and did adapt very quickly to the power cuts and blackouts cause by the socialists striking in the 70s. Modern technology means fridges and freezers will remain cold for up to 18 ours if power is disrupted, washing machines, bread makers, tvs, etc can all be set to work or record when the power comes back. wind and solar are unreliable I 100-% agree but I can and do picnick under our local turbines and the farmer grazes sheep right up to them. Nuclear is and never will be safe enough for me. Just my pennys worth.

Difficult one. I'm like most people I expect, I like to have access to the power but wouldnt want to live next door to a nuclear power station or to any of the associated waste facilities. Industry requires reliable power and no matter what we think about living in a more sustainable and low tech way, if big business and the general population require nuclear power then it then its going to happen no matter what we think.

The only option I can see is to do what BP did, move as far away from the risk as possible but still have access to the power generated and prep for the time when power isnt so reliable or is too expensive to use.

One thing is for sure, the private companies that are looking at building the new nuclear sites wont be doing so without rock solid profits being built into the contracts, and that means we all will be paying a damn sight more whatever energy is produced

The reason we moved back to Devon was primarily because this is HOME..where we both have our roots, but also because the prevailing wind from Hinckley Point is AWAY from Devon and we also have The Quantock Hills and Exmoor between us and it!

Dont trust nuclear power.

Could we not get prisinors to run on treadmills till rhey colapse. Creates a little electricity and they wouldnt be using electricty as they couldnt watch tv all day

Do not forget the gummint will go for the cheapest tender, that means short cuts every time, and of course if the children of the tax payer who will end up paying the double costs, IE dealing with the radioactive waste AND the hundreds of billions in decommisioning costs

I would never trust nuclear power as a long term energy source, for a number of years I had a military manual in my possession specificaly covering the effects of various yealds of a lot of the nuclear weaponry available during the 70's and 80's including predicted areas of destruction and contamination, effects of the different forms of radiation and the possible effects on the general population. I would far rather be without power than have a nuclear waste land.

Ironically it is worth reading up about Stephan Salter the father of wave power and how the funding for his project was pulled by the government of the time in favour of nuclear power.

The area around Hinckley point (Stogursey, Nether Stowey) is a well known cancer "hot spot", our doctor at the time was always getting that area doctors mail( same name) and it was all cancer results!

RE: The sheeple motivated
I appreciate all the comment but I'm worried about power.
No power, I can survive for a bit, long term, middle of winter?

As for the "what if if goes wrong".
Well it could, and knowing the nuke industry it probably will BUT there is nowhere safe.

Consider Chernobyl 1986, 1500 (ish) miles away.
It's taken over 20 years for Scottish lamb to become safe to eat.http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/healt...-1.1039073
Japan? TPTB say nothing significant hit us? Yeah right.

Now that's two arguments for not having Nuke power.
Pretty strong ones too.
BUT, moving round the UK to be safe, In fact anywhere in the world?
There is no safe.

Ok, lets ban nuke power, world wide.
Alternatives please that are viable?
Wind power? Works, not all the time but it works.
September 2012, the installed UK capacity 6,858 megawatts (MW)

Coal Fired? Lets pollute the planet with green house gases besides the EU is trying to shut them down.

Natural Gas?
Fine until the Russians do what they did to the Ukraine in 2009.
A whole country held to ransom when the Russians turned off the gas taps.

Wave power?
There's a 3 MW wave farm in Scotland. Cost £4 million, active 2010.

Annual UK consumption for 2006 (only figures I could find) was ~40GWH typically, and ~60GWH at peak.

A gigawatt is 1000 MW.
Every hour. So 40GW = 40,000 MW, 60GW = 60,000 MW

At 6000MWH wind power, we need 6 to 10 times more to break even to 2006 usage. And we're 6 years past that level.

Bear in mind we use in excess of 40GW PER HOUR so when the wind stops, something has to take the load.

And there ain't going to be anything soon as the EU is hell bent on shutting down carbon fuel power stations faster than MP's can jug a bottle of whiskey. Something has to take it's place.

Whilst nuke is not the wonder child, dangerous, definitely NIMBY, it's a viable long term source of power.

We may all prep for no power but over what duration?

My personal prepping for the electricity shortfall?
I've got a generator, oil lamps, 100's of candles, and 20 liters of diesel BUT when I run out of fuel?
If the petrol stations are blacked out, I can't refill my tanks.

Fuel duration before I have to turn feral and nick some?
600 road miles or 72 - 96 hours tops on the generator.

Then I'm sucking fuel through a hose.
ANYONE'S fuel!!!!!!!!!!!!
