The term "prepping" is an inclusive term incorperating several processes or steps.

Prepping includes building a store of supplies.

A means of defending/hiding those supplies.

The ability to replace the supplies as they are used up, normally through agricultural pursuits.

Until one has encompassed all the facets one is not actually "prepared" for much of anything.

The extent of these "preps" will be detirmined by the depth, duration and consciquences of the triggger event that requires one to go into "survival mode".

Fact is, most people are not equipped mentally, physically or with the equipment necessary to weather even a minor nuscience emergency. In most urban areas worldwide, a 24 hour power outage will trigger fire, riot, looting and general panic. This is why people talk about 'bugging out", anticipating that life will be easier in the rural areas.

Perhaps, perhaps not.

Many people forget about toilets,.. the best way would to probably construct an `earth toilet` is that what they are called, when the waste is broken down over time, and can be used to fertilizer the fields/garden

I know little about medical matters but Bracken is a registered home carer, so although not a fully qualified person,.. knows enough I think to get by on this score

We have very little in the way of defensive weapons, we dont think that we would need too many up here,... we have some, but the `bigger` weapons were bought mainly for getting food, and you do need something a bit bigger than a pellet gun to bring down a deer

You are right, life would revert back to the Victorian way of life, but then I really wouldn't mind that, I was brought up in similar circumstances, with no electric, no services or any kind,... life would not be easy,... but we would all have to buckle down and do our best

Highlander, you have exactly got my point. It's that gap period between the unthinkable happening when everyone rushes around like headless chickens, and when things settle to what would be a new normality. I personally couldn't see the point in rushing around brandishing guns - I would be aiming to provide for my family in the interim period with the minimum stress and hassle. Nothing is instant, and that is the point, so knowing how to quickly get things moving and keep them moving would be my priority.

You sound as if you have had exactly the right background. I am sure you would survive.

great post maryN....my grandparents had a small holding..thats where i get my total love of survival..kept chichens for years and pigs one time...looking for goats and quail and mybe some ducks. Yes i can build a ceptic tank ..and composting tiolet, and i know how the grow stuff ..and store it for all year round ...the knowledge i lack ...and there,s lots of it ....i get by the shed load of this site by members with vast more experience and always on tap to help....and a post just like this one ( forces you to think more on the truely important things we take for granted ) we think we know....but its better to go over and over till we really get it .....and yes billy we all look at world events thats why we are on this site ... as BP says slow down ...but be diligent in how you prep otherwise you could get things wrong....be methodic in what you do ( lesson learnt by me ) i recommend a good read of all posts on here by those dedicated to help and enlighten us all...including you billy

Just checked the USGS site and the amount of siemic activity appears the same as it always is , hardly any variation its just the usual ring of fire stuff, but for the sake of fairness please be so kind as to prove the figures and facts you so kindly offer us about the sudden change in vulcanism cos I cannot find anything substansive ?
Point 8 quakes are fairly common BTW but they are usually so deep they dont create sufficient P or S waves to cause major onshore damage. As for the south sea islands they get hit all the time because in many parts the islands are only one or two meters above sea level.

If I read this list right ( Help) the number of quakes appears to have gone down lately IIRC, or am I reading this wrong ?

i have come to realise that we live depending on others in oneway or another after an event when we are alone the next little thing you can't handle will kill you then who will look after your loved ones? opsec is good but it's not the be all and end all

Fart, I cannot find anything on Billys info on USGS, where am I going wrong ? All the worlds siesmographs, tilt meters, inclinometers, gas detectors, tsunami buoys etc run through but I'm obviously looking in the wrong place ??
