My cousin does quite a bit of leather work, he does larp(live action role playing) basicaly dungeons, and dragons but in the woods. Majority of the stuff he gets is online but it might be worth asking around.

RE: Leather Work
I'm doing Leatherwork as my skill for Gold DofE.
Tandy Leather has been recommended to me by those more knowledgeable as the best site for supplies http://www.tandyleather.eu/en-gbp/home/home.aspx
I would also recommend talking to old people on the verge of retiring who run leathe businesses. I talked to a guy who runs a shoe repair place in Sheringham, and since he is retiring due to mobility problems, I'm getting loads of old books on the subject for free!
Woe to those who add house to house and join field to field, Until there is no more room, So that you have to live alone in the midst of the land!

RE: Leather Work
I have not found anywhere to beat Le Prevo in Newcastle. Handy as I am close so can go in and get good deals on off cuts. As for tools, I use an overstitch wheel for marking, a needle with a hardwood handle as an awl and a couple of leather needles but you could spend just a few quid extra to buy better / more appropriate tools. You will want something to use as a folder - you can buy a bone or plastic one, I just improvise with what I have around, but if plastic or wood.
I do not get into gluing stuff as I do not feel what I am making it warrants it, you might want to look into what is best for something carrying food quality liquids.

This would be a good first, easy project. Just cut out an outline of your feet onto some tough leather for a Spartan style set of sandals!
How to tie them:
