History records it so we can learn. Politicians look at it and decide;
1) It wasn't them so they didn't try hard enough, were too soft, or didn't spend enough money
2) They know what they are doing so it will be fine this time with them in charge

That's an interesting view. I guess the idea is to make it look like we've done everything by the book. Not sure it's part of my thought pattern, but I get where you're coming from.
