EMERGENCY ENERGY ALERT issued 1.30PM today
Nat Grid announced an emergency today as multiple generator plants failed and they want mothballed power stations brought online today by 4.30 PM in order to cover emergency shortfall.

National Grid has asked electricity plants to ramp up supplies at short notice to keep the lights on without eating into reserves.

The network issued a notice to the power industry under a measure it is using for the first time since 2012, blaming “multiple plant break downs” for the shortage.

It comes as Britain is facing a wider squeeze on electricity margins – the level of spare power it needs to hold in the system to ensure supplies are adequate at peak times – following the closures of power stations.

The latest move saw the grid ask at 1.30pm for an additional 500MW – equivalent to one of three units in a typical power station – to be provided for the tea-time peak between 4.30pm and 6.30pm.

National Grid said: “This is part of our standard toolkit for balancing supply and demand and is not an indication there is an immediate risk of disruption to supply or blackouts.

“It indicates that we would like our power held in reserve to be higher.

“This Notification of Inadequate System Margin is a result of multiple plant break downs.”

A spokeswoman would not go into specific details about the break downs.

But she said that plants and generators would typically experience some technical problems re-connecting to the grid following shut downs for maintenance over the summer.

National Grid has insisted it has the right tools in place to cope with this winter’s energy demands – with contingency plans including mothballed plants being on standby.

But its Winter Outlook report last month said that without the measures it had put in place, spare capacity – the gap between generating capacity and peak demand – would plunge to just 1.2%.

The BBC are the mouthpiece of the government(of whatever party is in power), anybody who takes any notice of what they say is naïve.

The energy issue is only going to get worse as more old stations HAVE to close by the end of 2017 but no new stuff will be available til 2022

RE: EMERGENCY ENERGY ALERT issued 1.30PM today
this is nothing new and has been known about for years.
I've just dug out one of my old note books.
back in 2008 I wrote: Britain is likely to face a shortfall in electricity generation within 5-7 years, the number of power plants coming out of service over that time make shortages likely.
the UK will experience prolonged power cuts as a third of generating capacity is due to be decommissioned by 2017 but will not be replaced fast enough , new reactors will not be ready in time to take up the shortfall. endquote.
apart from a couple of new power plants, built by foreign money you will notice, which wont be online for years and in the case of Hinckley Point the actual structure hasnt even been started to be constructed yet, nothing ever changes.
better not tell the pleb in the street, they might panic?Big Grin
