Since when does being rich make people unhappy? And when does being poor make people happy? I'd rather be rich and happy than poor and unhappy!!! Here's an even better one....I'd rather be rich and happy than poor and happy! If you're rich, you can give more to charity and help other people (oh, and to everyone saying "Rich people don't give to charity....blar blar, I'm as dumb as f**k." Some of the richest people in the world have given away ALL of their money to charity and charitable foundations! Or they are leaving it in their will to go to a charity! Next time you build a $65billion charitable trust, or leave $68billion to a charity working on curing and providing free medication to 3rd world countries, then you can open your mouth about how rich people don't give to charity. Until then, sit quietly in your bubble of ignorance. Oh, and while you're in that bubble, work out who gave the most money to charity for Live-Aid, Children in Need, and loads of other events like that. And, for s**ts and giggles, why not work out how long you'd have to work with your current wage to give even 10% of a $30billion donation to charity!!!)

Money doesn't buy happiness. True. Poverty doesn't buy it either.
Haha, I just kind of went off on one there. I think it's too much coffee too late in the day.
nice rant there m8 but i have a pointer to make of my own. the rich pay charity for tax relief and influence. and with the amount of cash that has been payed from all over the world to help africa shall we say. the place should be like Dubai!! but only white africa has risen, much like oh say Dubai. i do agree how ever that money dose buy happyness, security ect.
he never planned to fail, he just failed to plan. like lambs to the slaughter the wolfs look down from the hill tops. we are those wolfs!!!

If you are earning £50k a year PAYE, you will be taking home £34K a year. To be presentable in a £50K a year job, you are going to need to wear a decent suit everyday - there is £300 for a suit, £100 for a shirt X 5 - there - replace once every six months thats £4k a year. Ten shirts at £100. £500 a year on two pairs of shoes and maintainace. BMW 5 series / AUDI A8 / Merc E Class - £300 - 500 a month depending on spec - £3600 - 5k a year. So we are talking over £10k a year to get to dressed and get to work.

You are not going to be taken serious driving a rotten 15 year old metro in a tesco suit to a £50k a year job.

Stick at least £6k on top of that for work related socialising - drinks, meals, golf, what ever, just so you keep your profile up.

You are soon taking home £20K a year from your £50K job, that is without fuel to get to and from work and paying your normal bills.

A few small changes to this.

Suits: 5 suits between £800 and £1000. My boss went mad at me for having a suit HUNG on an M&S hanger. The suit was Brioni £1000+
Shoes: 2 Pairs, one at £300 and the other £800. Plus upkeep of the shoes. But those shoes have lasted a while now.
Spot on with the cars. I had 3 cars at one point, and you're expected to treat clients. Some clients will look down on you for anything less than a merc, others will look down on you for having a merc, so you get a Vauxhall (I still have that one). Oh and the 300 miles a day fuel expense.

I was about £150 better off a month on £50k than I was on £18k. Job depicts lifestyle. Lifestyle depicts expenditure. Expenditure depicts savings/investments. Savings/investments depicts wealth.

At the end of the day, my lifestyle was costing me my health (oh, add to the expenditure column 'health clubs') and my free time. ANYONE with a brain and the ability to act professionally can earn £50k or more. It might cost you your health, family, freetime, and the rest. But it is doable.

When SD met me in Bristol, I was enjoying a house share (flat share) to keep expenditure down, and even then I was earning about £35k-ish. It's better to have other people work for you, than to work for them.

RE: Radio 4
We don't live in a capitalist society. In a real capitalist system only the strong enterprises survive, and when they fail, its like a large tree falling in the rain forest; new businesses flood up to fill the new gap. Currently, the forest is choked with diseased trees that block out all the light, but refuse to die (Banks sponging up vast amounts of our money)

It will always boil down to survival of the fittest, all other political and moral constructs can only exist because we are for the most part fed, clean and clothed, and not in direct competition with one another. For now.
Woe to those who add house to house and join field to field, Until there is no more room, So that you have to live alone in the midst of the land!

That's cool BarneyBoy. All we can go by is what people say and what they're like when we meet them.
