In fairness, if we didn't pay the government for protection, we would have to pay someone else protection money.

I would rather pay the government, who are at least slightly accountable. Than the Mafia who are not accountable or questionable. Even though the Mafia would probably do a better job right now, I still prefer the idea of the government's accountability and their No Death Sentence policy.
