the answer is yes , diesel fuel is about the same as kerosene (paraffin) but with the additives to make it a motor fuel it will also smoke a lot more but will work

Paraffin (kerosene) is about 65p per litre at the moment, look around for filling stations (usually in rural areas) that sell it at the pump. If you buy it in small (5litre) containers such as you can find in diy stores it will cost you at least double that.
