U.S. has a small ground force in that area already, part of the Multi National Force of Observation. The U.S. can intervene is certain circumstances under the 1979 Camp David aggrement as Egypt is only allowed a small token military presence in the area. That is why the Sinai has become so lawless, the local Bedu have been smugglers for decades, now days they smuggle weapons on behave of Iran & Syria along with a little kidnapping of North African refugees attempting to get to Israel. President Mursi of Egypt is attempting to tear up the Camp David Aggrement and re-militarise the area. If Egypt were to do this, that is were the real threat would come from.
