Surviving the Emergency Room

re: orthopedic injuries
couple years ago I broke my ankle, went to the ER and after waiting 3 hours they did exactly as the article states: took x-ray and referred me to a specialist. wouldn't even give me some good pain meds. So when I saw the specialist he said if I had immediately put ice on it instead of going to the ER, I could have cut the recovery time in half because the inflammation (swelling) does additional damage to the area.

I broke my ankle and foot and they didn't even X-Ray it. Gave me pain meds and sent me home. A week later I was in and had it X-rayed. Ooops, it's broken. Too late to do anything but it's healing nicely anyway so what you did was just right. WTF! Never trusted them after that.

But there will be paramedics and ER nurses. This old paramedic/orthopaedic technician has stocked up on lots of supplies and OTC meds. Just thinking "outside the box" so to speak!

BP, Depends what the actual event is. There may be some at first for some scenarios, none for others.

Just thinking "outside the box" so to speak!wont be any nurses around here-we are 30 miles from Accident and Emergency(our version of your ER), post SHTF that might as well be 300 miles(more if the river bridges are out) even if their still operational-which I somehow doubt. got loads of military type first aid kits and otc meds and my old first aid manual(from when I was first responder on the building sites-long time ago). That was a good read. I worked in the ER for 9 years before I moved to the UK and went out on the road. I keep screaming all the time about common sense when it comes to medical advice. If you hurt take a pain killer, if it's bleeding stop it first then take a look. Having worked both sides of the pond I realize that people are the same where ever you go. There are just as many idiots here as in the states. And that very true for Texas (lived in San Antonio for 6 years)
![]() I've talked to a couple of people I work with about if they would goto work if SHTF and most wouldn't. I would personally set up shop in my village and try and take care of my community with my extensive medical kit and maybe a extra ambulance to provide power with its electrical outlets ![]() |
