We used to do orienteering using a compass and 1:50,000 OS map to find a token, so you could technically geocache without a gps.

Geocaching is great for motivating people to get out of the house and to get exploring, but from what I've seen of the people that participate in geocaching, they wouldn't know which way or even how to orientate a map and compass.

They have a hand held GPS device into which they enter the coordinates, and off they go. There is no skill in it, unlike orienteering which is a great skill to have.

As for "GPS" Coordinates, well aren't these just "Map" Coordinates?

Now I'm not knocking GPS units, they are fantastic pieces of kit, but SS says, don't rely on them either working or being available when you need them most. Even now before any possible event there can be issues, they can be affected by weather and there are plenty black spots around where there is no signal at all.
