From The Times Archive 13th December 1923

A distressful situation exists in the western isles of Scotland. The potato crop is a failure, the hay has been ruined by rain, gales from the Atlantic have destroyed the harvest, and on account of the sodden state of the peat there is a shortage of fuel.......unless prompt measures are taken.......20,000 people will find themselves.......face to face with starvation.
