The best of the current books out for post apoc fiction are I think Day By Day Armegeddon by JL Bourne and its follow on book.
And Plague of the dead, Thunder and ashes, and Survivors all the Morningstar saga by Z A Recht.
If you like older stuff like Death of Grass and world in Winter by John Christopher you will prolly like The NIGHT of the triffids which is a modern follow on to the original DAY of the triffids
