You'd have to get a geiger counter. Not a clue on price though mate. They're those clicking things that labs use to detect radiation.

Either that, or photo-film. Yep, the old fashioned camera film stuff. That is sensitive to radiation. But it's not much use. It's best used to show the amount of radiation you have been exposed to.

The film stuff is no use. It tells you you are OK, OK, OK, OK , Exposed too late to do anything.... dead You need something that says the amount of exposure so you can stop in time.

You can get personal dosimeters very cheap. There are quite a few on ebay. You will also need the dosimeter reader to read them which is a bigger piece of kit. Also it needs calibrating, as do all geiger type readers. I would forgo the calibration in an emergency. All you need to know is what the background rad rate was in your locale before a radiation event and then anything reading above that post event, is extra & unwelcome. You need to study what dose rates are viable post event, so you know what rad amount you can tolerate if necessary at the time. Small amounts build up & are cumulatve over time but so is the drop off rate. Also, internal dose is vastly different to external irradiation!!
I read somewhere recently that NBC Masks & kit that troops get supplied are usually carried with testing & physical decontamination substances. Amongst these items was listed Radiation indicator papers. Something like litmus papers but for radiation. Maybe these are worn on the outside of soldiers clothing, so it is apparant when one of the papers changes colour. That could be v.useful while on the move. Hope some of this is useful. TL.

really it depends on your needs from it! are you looking at something that'll give you a heads up on a dirty bomb a few minutes before everyone else? something that'll tell you that the average background radiation is changing?...if so does it need to be something you have with you at all times?...like some of the novel geiger watches

if you looking at something that'll give you good readings over a long time (although im no sure why you'd need it, unless researching?) then you'll probably need one of the larger "block an wand" sorta things

just read about, do some novel searches on google like "smallest geiger in world" or "geiger watch" you'll be surprised where the links take ya!...graet way to find some nice stuff
