Well, its the same product that is in the magazine. I doubt they are fragile, only thing that would bother me is the amount of release pull required. You could use bite alarms used in carp fishing, Aldi and Lidl have them on dirt cheap now and again, set off by line moving through them, very sensitive.

we're going to Lidl in the morning, so if i see any i'll let you know, otherwise i think i'm back to the fishing line and the tins!

i have those bite alarms but mine are remote and cover 60mtrs you get 4 and the alarm
you spike in ground or tree then run line through from a fixed point to another fixed point then when the lines knocked your alarm beeps but there is no wire to lead from the trap to you

You can water proof them by putting them in a plastic bag. Not may I say perfect but would do especially useful with the "stobe" light I thought because the noise can be difficult to pinpoint at night but the strobe would be a dead giveaway... and I'm sure with a bit of looking something cheaper would turn up...
