IF ?

It must be very hard for city dwellers living in a place they feel they have to live in, as opposed to wanting to live in,... there is going to be so many reason why they cant move even if they wanted to,.. from kids in schools, to needing to be close to hospitals for medical reasons,... to say nothing of their work places

I have never lived in a city, only remote areas, but I think I can talk about the subject as I see it, and what we were lucky enough to do

The last place Bracken and I lived was on the Welsh borders, a very rural place, it had been in my family for generations,.. and was just about perfect,.. the trouble was that it was surrounded by not such good areas, if the shit hit the fan it would/could have been hard to get out of our little enclave to a safer place,... because I am sure that the hordes would have arrived from the many built up areas around us.

So being in your perfect spot is not everything, thought has to go into whats around you, and what you would need to do to get through such a barrier

[re-wind a few years ]......Bracken when she had just left school felt the same as many do here now, she lived in Glasgow and wanted out badly, so she got a job working in a hotel in Morar close to Malliag west Highlands,..she got a seasonal job, and ended up staying for years.

So when we wanted out of our Welsh border home,.. we headed north in an old camper, lived out of that until we bought the house we are in now, did we buy the house as a prepper buys a house?,.. put it this way, everything we thought of had a prepers view lingering in there somewhere

well here goes my try?
grew up in the best part of newcastle (lol) and had a good street education but the school was so shit the gov closed it after i left with no good gcse worked hard and self empolyed till i had a family then made the choice to move miles from the shit hole i grow up in best thing i did, i still travel to loads of towns and know people from both sides of the fence but my kids don't and our doing very well.
i picked my location well and could deal with the questions asked easy but my point is this if you know something is shit you have to make changes and new plans or put up with it and realise your preps will be weak and your prob wasting your time trying.
i had to leave all my family and friends change business and suffer the hassel of new friends but the rewards is worth it
so stop looking for reasons why you can relocate because if you really want you can i did!

I live not in a city or the countryside, I live in a town. A 5 min walk around the corner there is a fairly bad council Estate. There are a good few druggies and a big handful of numb nuts.
The druggies and numb nuts all pall about together and kinda keep themselves to themselves. The street I live on is a good street. I don't venture into town at night and I don't go into town drinking. There is always someone at home, So the chance of a break in is slim. (Although I always keep the massive bolts locked on the doors ) At this moment in time, I don't feel threatened or the need to move for safety reasons. I am however saving up like mad to get out of the UK. I HATE IT HERE !
I am constantly glued to R.T and Al-jazera, Spend many hours trawling the net, check on here a few times a day. I would like to think I would be able to pack up and go in a few mins notice. I feel safe here for now and until the time comes when I should worry, I'm staying put.

If you had wrote this a few years back, I would be in agreement, and would wish you well,... but not now

The problem with this idea at this time is linked to the EU problem, I doubt there will be many places/countries that you could go to where the population wouldn't consider you an outsider who is eating their food,... if the area collapses, then you may well become the one to steal from first,... I hope I am wrong, but I think it would be a good idea to keep it in mind,...its already happened to ex-patts in Spain

Why leave for the countryside cos when you get there I gaurantee there will be shit loads of other folks just like you. You will then have to build your shelters, hunt for food and protect your family, not an easy life guys many will not make it. Why not instead bug in, as long as you are not at risk from a big fecking wave of course, bug in and wait it out, wait for nature and whatever the shit is to take its toll, there will be plenty of food, fuel and anything else you may need around the city with very little resistance to stop you getting it, then you can head for the hills with your clan and pick a nice house out. My advice pick up the free motor market weekly from the garages that will let you know where all the classic cars are in your area, handy if your nice BMW or what ever you have wont go any more, and also get hold of the property pages and see where all the empty houses are, again handy places if you need a few stop off's while bugging out. So I reckon the city dwellers have it pretty good if they can look after thereselves for a few weeks or months while the population is getting wiped out.

I'm inclined to agree with you. We spent 8 years in France. It was great fun but things have changed with the economic crisis. Friends still tell me that there are now far more attacks on foreign-owned property than ever before. Resentment of incomers is growing, and you would be classed as an immigrant.

I lived in the countryside for 20 years growing up. Out in the Fens, little village. Great fun, and yes, if I could live there and earn what I earn now I would. But I can't, so I need to live either near a city, or somewhere commutable. So that leaves either a motorway near by, or a decent train station. All of those locations are now jacked up in price as people realise they can live in the countryside but work in the city. This has driven the house prices (to rent or buy) way above what is normal.

We moved to Southampton from Tadley, a little village in Hampshire. Southampton is a shit hole, full of students and foreigners and "locals". None of which I really like to socialise with. Why did we move here? Property in the Tadley / Basingstoke / Newbury area is extortionate, easy transport links to London jacking those prices up again. Southampton is cheap(ish) for what you get, half decent transport links to London and by the Sea. As the wife now has a permanent job then we have to stay in this area. Given half a chance I'd move to the Isle of Wight as property is even cheaper there. Failing that then it would be the New Forest (if we win the lottery). If work wasn't an issue then believe me, I'd down tools and move us all into the middle of nowhere - somewhere right up the north of Scotland. NOT deepest darkest Wales, as 90% of UK preppers will be heading there should anything happen.

So at the moment it's not really a choice to remain - the wife wants a job. She has one now that isn't just a wage coming in, it's brilliant training. She'll be prepping people for operations and assisting in theatre.

When will we decide that the cities are too dangerous to remain in?
Hopefully before it's too late...
