Surviving public transport systems

I try not to use "Never" and deliberately didn't use here.
I really feel for the unfortunates living in cities who can't get out under their own steam.
If TPTB were to shut down public transport systems in a major city during a crisis, it would be disastrous.
No escape from any unfolding horror and an almost guaranteed traffic jam from hell as all the private vehicles mobilized.
I shudder just thinking about it.
