If you drive anything requiring a digital tachograph card nowadays then you are required to carry your tacho card at ALL times. You do not have to carry your drivers license whenever you're driving, but have to produce it at a police station within a certain period if you're stopped by the police, whereas the way the tacho laws have been framed it's an offence not to have your tacho card on you 24/7 (even on holiday within Europe). We learnt this during our drivers CPC training (another compulsory hoop to jump through) Moral of the story is: if you're stopped by the police and don't have your card on you, don't let the buggers know you're a professional driver.
