The grit in those yellow boxes isn't very good for compacted snow. Best stuff I've found is cement powder. The old 4x4 club swore by it. Rub it round your tyres, then make tracks of powder to drive on. Then drive out - no messing around.

Wear gloves when applying though, or you really will look like the grey man
