The smells from cooking are a lot different from the smells created when just heating up, not a lot of people will be `cooking` in the sense that you mean, most stored food will only require heating up.

...but you are right, smells will travel a long way if there is noting else going on, like other peoples fires, strong winds will help to disperse smells

Thinking on a bit, the cooking of hunted/snared meat will need to be done, or the hunt would have been for nothing, probably best done at night,... maybe cooked on your open fire, where smells will exit high up through your chimney
