As you can see from these forums and the replies there is hope for your local community. Arrange a few one on ones, go to group meets when they are set up and eventually it will come together. It isn't a knitting circle where people come to pass the time these groups are building relationships and skills that could mean the difference between life and death and they are being very careful how they do it as you should.
