RE: Route Security
I think the key point mentioned is "enough lead time before the masses panic then you may be able to beat the rush of traffic." My experience has been this is much easier said than done, especially when working. If you leave too soon you risk looking like a paranoid idiot, your boss is probably gonna be pissed cos you took off work for a couple days and your wife will be extra happy you dragged her along. If you wait until the situation is obvious then its probably too late and you'll be stuck in traffic hell.

One small point of contention for me at least is the proposition that one is "safest while the wheels are rolling ." Just speaking for myself, in SHTF scenario, I would not feel safe at all driving a normal civilian vehicle. IMO, too great a target and too vulnerable. The hope would be to get where you need to be before all hell has broke loose. Persoanlly, if we cant stay put, I plan to stay close- within 1 days walk. We would have way too far to travel to find any open arms welcoming us, to me its not a realistic option.

interested in hearing other opinions. i would suspect i'm in the minority when it comes to travelling by vehicle.
