If I were limited to one firearm for subsistance hunting use in the US, it would be a scoped bolt action hunting rifle of military caliber, either 5.56, 7.62, .303 or .30-06, all being popular here. My own preference leans towards a .30 calibre, for longer range and greater effectiveness. I would not want a .22 as my only firearm, but an accurate .22 rifle ( or pistol) would be my choice for a second gun, due to its lower cost, weight and cube of ammunition.
If I lived in town, instead of out in the country, a pump shotgun would be a viable choice, but unless I could cache a thousand or so shotshells divided among several locations, it would not be my primary choice.
