It seems like there's a very "mystical" perception of tech.
I half agree with you BP, but also half disagree.
We'll be very much concerned with getting food on the table…after our stores run out. Within an hour I can happily bag 4 big rabbits, and that's with an unmoderated springer, an hour a day…sorted. But, even easier still…just use a cache of food, or stored food. Done. Food for the week..for the next year. Which then gives me a week to convert a few wooden panels into windmill blades, attach an alternator, rig up a pulley belt made from a leather belt or garden hose, or insulated wire, and build a small frame for it. Or to detach a car battery and rig it to some solar panels. Or simpler still, just use a trickle feeder and attach it direct to the car battery. Presto, light for the evenings.
What about the things we build now that we know will work? Convert a few paint tins into wood-gas for a generator, then when fuel stops running, your generator doesn't. Things like that, we we can do now, will make the transition to a SHTF scenario much easier to cope with.
Hell, you could even go as far as to charge a few batteries and get some small speakers going to enjoy a campfire in your street wish music and beer. Okay, maybe not that far. I mean, who wants to have their neighbours as friends on their side?
