I've got the book. It's a good read. The soda cans and sand thing is massively overstated. He talks about how to make a basic lathe from wood and things like that in the book. It's a great read, but not magical.

The story seems to just be another way for him to advertise his book The Knowledge. I wrote about it in a previous post I think.
