Those who were mobile used guard channels but you could call on channel 19 at anytime.
It was generally accepted practice that everyone went quiet when a 10.33 call was running with the two parties changing channel down to channel 9 as soon as possible.

Of course that was when people actually gave a damn about their "fellow man".

Good point Paul,

CB Channel 9 onthe hour and half hour is a sensible way to proceed. And of course nonitoring for several minutes either side of these times to allow for time keeping errors.

For PMR446 the unofficial general calling channel is Ch 8. In emergency to call for help CTCSS and DCS should be disabled. If the radio cannot disable CTCSS, then Ch8 CTCSS code 8 is the next best choice.
