Thank you for the heads up on this Jon, I'll look out for that. I'm still around but laying low as they say.
Mr tax man gave me an unexpected refund so I've invested in a Kenwood V71E as my main rig and hooked it up to a Diamond x300 antenna. I can get contacts out as far as the east coast and well over in to the pennines on VHF simplex @ 10W with this set up so I'm really pleased with it and I've got the option of using upto 50W if I ever need it. I've also programmed in repeaters to get out further when needed and just for the fun of it. I'm building myself a portable colinear to use with our tourer caravan and will be getting a mobile antenna for the car when funds allow. I still carry the Boafeng with me when out and about and it does give me wider TX possibilities than the V71E.
When I can afford it i want to add a decent HF rig to my set up but in the meantime I'm using the rigs at the local amateur radio club, so I'm learning loads and the members are really great - they are really willing to share their skills and experience to help newcomers progress. Some of the old boys have some good tales to tell. The guy who teaches morse at the club was transmitting at 30wpm from France in 1944, so he knows his stuff
