I think that anyone who needs meds for anything, including diabetes, is in big trouble if they cannot make it themselves or control it another way. We talk years in survival terms, these people are talking months and even then it is one continual worry.

We need to find a way or we won't be seeing many of these people three months down the line.

As far as silver and gold go. I have simple views;
What are you going to buy with it? - Try buying that now.
How long does it keep before you can't eat it?
Exactly what is the person you intend to barter with going to do with it?
How much is a loaf of bread, a rabbit, a gallon of water in gold or silver?

I think you are better off with other items for an event.
