What should I prep for?

What should I prep for?
I'm listening to the radio, reading the Internet news, and reading to all sorts of thoughts, expert opinion, and paranoia about how the world is going to end SOON.

So far it looks like:

Economic and Political Huh
The EU Collapses
Total Economic collapse of all the worlds finances.
Middle East War (Israel v Iran) drags in the US, Russia & China, that turns into WW3.
Religious wars i.e. Moslems verses Christians develops into WW3
The Yanks invaded us and turn us into their 53rd state
The Germans assimilate us we become part of their super state and have to learn German.
The New World Order establishes itself and we all have to wear grey.

Global Warming causes Huh
A pandemic caused by mosquitoes.
We all become zombies
Food and water shortages

Other Global tilts Huh
The oil drys up.
The Myans got it right!
The magnetic poles reverse
Solar storms knocks out all electricity
The world gets hit by an asteroid
Super Volcanoes
Global Tsunamis
Alien invasion.

It's all very tiring.
What exactly am I to prep for?
World events or my local Tesco running out of food?

Go one, someone sort the paranoia out from the real worries and give me some sort of direction to my prepping.
Global or Local?

RE: What should I prep for?
well alot of these situations have the same preps involved, storing food and supplies (petrol, luxury items like toilet paper and all the things that would become scarce fast, or be unmanufacturable, due to oil crises or whatever.

planning an emergency bug out location, learning basic survival skills, and how to hunt, grow food, where to find water and all this sort of stuff.

but ill try and group things together a bit more.

an asteroid hitting, a super volcano exploding, global tsunamis and aliens are pretty earth shattering and without extensive preps extending to personal bunkers and the like you wont survive. (and even with a bunker you might not)

oil drying up, total economic collapse, food and water shortages are all thing that will cause major civil unrest and the best chances of survival are being ready and able to defend your property and having a pre planned location to go to, and also plenty of food and water supplies, including the ability to hunt and grow food if need be.

zombies...grab your weapons and kit and supplies, get in a car, raid your local shops, and get as remote as possible, ideally to an island, make it a defensible place, never out in the open, take over an old farmhouse, or an old mill, sure up the first floor, make a single entrance that is ideally straight up like a ladder, exits are any top windows, almost all people are your friend, establish what kind of infection your being confronted with, are they slow, fast, stupid, clever? transmitted by bites? or something that triggers when dead or nearly dead...i could go on, but its not realistic is it?

pandemics, hunker down, avoid human contact, make sure you can get infected, if you get infected, pray to the governmental disease control and health service to find a cure...again supplies and a location to go to if need be are good ideas...nbc gear will be valuable too depending on the nature of the disease, breathers, anti contamination suits etc.

and finally all war scenarios, it depends on where in the war we'd be, if its danger of invasion imminent, get the fuck out of dodge, go to your secure location, lie low, trust no one with an odd accent and moniter radio traffic, if need be dig a bunker to evade detection, and either be prepared to live there indefinately or pray the war ends quickly without total anhiliation, alternately you could sit at home and hope the invaders arent in a kill everyone mood. or if we're doing the invading, be prepared for hardship, supplies and the ability to hunt and grow food will become invaluable, communities will go into overdrive, the government will probably gear all resources towards the war effort, depending largely on the scale of the war, but the way its looking to me, it'll be a big'un

so in summary i think the main places to concentrate are, brush up your general survival and living skills, hunting for food and growing food, as well as finding and purifying water should be chief among them, power outages will be common, so any renewable energy sources you have will again be valuable (also prone to theft, so make your property anti theft, coat it in glass and razor blades if need be Tongue)

also go over you bug out plans, make sure you got enough fuel stockpiled to get to your BOL at very least, more is always better.

otherwise, same old same old, keep on prepping. hope some of that helped a bit Big Grin

oh and to the last question, think global, prep local Smile

RE: What should I prep for?
I'm slowly giving up lol. What ever happens it sounds as though we are fooked, I don't really wanna live in fear and hide for the rest of my life, Yes, I wanna survive but living and acting like a cave man, I'm not to sure, If we become hardened and our kids become hardened, Is there going to be any compassion and love left in the future world? Or we just gonna kill everyone and everything in sight?
Do we want to be living like they are in Syria?
Do we want to live like this.....
Not being able to let the kids go and and play in fear that the noise will attract the bad guys?
Trying to light a fire in sub zero conditions,
The loss of loved ones due to murder
No hospitals
I could go on.....
Everyone is going to change, and not for the better, not for a long, long time,
Knowing out luck, there will be a financial collapse, We get used to surviving,
then there will be a massive volcano, we get used to surviving,
Then there will be a massive Global Tsunami, who ever is left, gets used to surviving, Then the planet will get sucked into space due to whatever and who ever is left will die along with Mother Earth....
EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY WHILST YOU CAN LOL

90% of the battle to survive is having the mental fortitude to do so, if i had kids they would be my inspiration, as it is my inspiration is purely selfish, i wish to survive because i like being me and experiencing life, even if its hard to do so

as for becoming hardened, with a total collapse, yes we would, so would our children, but that doesnt mean we lose our compassion we are still people, and good ones at that, sure having compassion would be a weakness, but i think its one alot of us would be willing to have, to a certain extent anyway xD

as you get used to your new way of life, you'll learn new habits and new ways of doing things, if you do end up going back to these old ways and living like that, be happy you had modern society for the short time you did, with all the bonuses and perks that its brung us Smile

but yes, eat drink and be merry Big Grin

RE: What should I prep for?
NR posted something a while back that i agree with 100%. We sometimes get too caught up in current events we have no control over. Instead, like hrusai said, we should concentrate on the things we can control like our preps. Food, water, heat, shelter and security are the basics and apply to virtually all scenarios from a temporary fuel shortage to an alien invasion.

So imo to paraphrase NR, we should stop worrying about all the bad news on the idiot box as there is sod all we can do to alter it, but just concentrate on gaining experience and knowledge that might help us survive whatever the problem is as most of the skills apply to most of the scenarios.

I'm trying to work my way up from the beginning of man...Caveman, iron age, viking, roman, etc, They were all pretty barbaric and I think in a way, we HAVE calmed down in modern society?

RE: What should I prep for?
i dont think, if the big event happens, we will go back to a cave man type existence, more like a pre industrial age where everything is done by hand instead of machines. we may have a period where things start running out then everything levels out. we dont know exactly what will happen, so all we can do is prepare for the worst and hope it dosent get that bad.
Some people that prefer to be alone arent anti-social they just have no time for drama, stupidity and false people.

imagine taking someone of 30 years of age from the medieval period and plonking them in todays society, after the initial adjustment phase, they'd be ecstatic, not having to hunt all the time, or slog their guts out for almost nothing, the internet, tv and beer and pizza and drugs and if they get injured they get looked after? to them, we live in heaven!

and if the world ends tomorrow, ill be happy i got to read books, have free access to art, and cinema and music, oh the music! yes i'll be sad its gone (although with solar chargers and the knowledge im stockpiling should be easy enough to rekindle technology )

but yeah just be happy you enjoyed what you did, as a prepper we need strong minds, annd strong minds dont dwell on what could've been or should've been, they just get on with what is, and thats something we should all endeavour to do!

spot on IB1, forgot about NR saying that, but your both totally right ^^...as BP's signature says, Keep.It.Simple.Stupid, stick to your core preps, once you got those down to an acceptable degree you can start specialising for specific scenarios, but that'll take years before your ready Tongue

oh and i agree with BP, we've advanced too much as a race to totally regress to stoneage methods, the knowledge is there and is easily enough retrievable in enough forms to make it feasible to get most facilities back up and running within say 100 years max imo Tongue

RE: What should I prep for?
As a fairly new prepper and my eyes just beginning to open to everything shit in this world it is hard not to get scared and nervous, I am entering a new transition stage myself by being a prepper and it can get scary Sad
I hope in time, if we have some, I can harden up, I think being a woman doesn't help, we are naturally soft and kind hearted, that's why the men do the hunting!
Slowly, slowly catch a monkey and all that. I will NOT wake up tomoz and be reformed into a hardened person, 40 years of being nice is hard to shrug off Smile
I'm doing things at my own pace and yes the pace is slow but I'm building up a resistance at the same time, I don't want to be hit square bang in the face when TSHTF Smile
