If you have a biometric passport you are already halfway there!
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

I can see the usefulness of such things. But at the same time I can see how massively the data/stem can be abused by those with the power. Much like cloud computing.

Not a chance in hell I'll be getting one of those. I have no passport, not had one for years. Driving licence never has the right address on it (move too bloody often) car is rarely insured at the correct address either (and I get through those pretty quickly too) mobile is a disposable number. I used to circulate through them every few months when I was younger, kind of enforced by the people I used to work with. Pay cash most places or put the money in the wifes account and let her pay.

Hhhmmmmmm, this might be time to go and get a "Mr Nice"

i know i'm paranoid, and i understand that this article is paranoid a little bit more, but.

in my country we already have this compulsory ID cards for about 10 years, some two or three years ago they became biometric, same as the passports.
and you only need passport for the visiting countries that are not having agreement with my country concerning the ID cards.
so i knowingly broke the law for about 10 years not acquiring the ID card, and having my all traveling abroad with passport only. why am i not fined already? well because there is no punishment for breaking this particular law. the "rulers" probably realized that it is impossible to convince all the older citizens to acquire this cards.
when those cards were first introduced there were lot of publicity about how convenient it would be to have one. this card was claimed to replace your driving license, your banks debt cards, public transport tickets and even supermarkets discount cards!

well, for now those cards do work as driving licenses (only domestically), as public transport tickets (only in two bigger cities) and the discount cards for only one market chain and you can digitally signs your documents and even vote in the local and parliament elections.

so it duplicates a lot of documents, but not really replaces anything.
the banks are only accepting ID cards as identifications for domestic internet transactions, not for the ATM cash withdrawal and not as credit card, because of not sufficient identity security.

problem with the ID cards is you need to update its some kind of digital certificate (for about 10€ or so) every two years. card itself is good for five years. for me the card is just another form of taxing the citizens.

as internet user i hate every privacy breach so i don't use any of google programs or search engines or android platforms. and i hate our ID card for being to exposed both to the government and the private sector. for example, the banks can not legally track someones transactions and priorities outside the bank system. but for example if somebody visits casinos certain times, even if he pays cash, banks will be advised to consider twice when he asks them for credit.
