If you're self conscious, start with walks in the morning, at like 6am.

You won't get any odd looks. If you're scared you will, have a dog lead with you and be in the fields. Say your dog loves to vanish off, then just walk about, randomly shouting "King Bow Wow The Third, Here Boy!" then there's noway anyone will think you're anything but a dog person.

Better yet.....get one of those artificial comedy leads that makes it look like you have an invisible dog. People will be so busy staring at the dog, that they'll totally miss the fact that you're feeling self conscious.
