bug out vehicles
which vehicle would you use and why?
mines a landrover discovery 300tdi.
why?
because it's cheap has a big bull bar to push thing out the way, loads of power and easy to to fix,. i can get it start with no power if needed and as well as running on veggie oil, derv and kero (heating oil) it can hold us all pull a trailer and can go nearly any where and you can customise it to the hilt.
any better one's Smile

RE: bug out vehicles
I'm looking for a Landrover myself for those very reasons but for after an event. I'm sure there are other vehicles that are better for bugging out either because they have more range, tougher or whatever. A bug out vehicle may be something that you abandon after bugging out if there is no use for it.Obviously we try and avoid that but it is an option.

A modified coach for bugging out to get you all to your retreat with a land rover for after an event for example.

im lucky as my hobbie is offroading i use a nissan terrano lwb eveything that can be uprated has been it can carrie a good size load and has a 18 gallon fuel tank the engine on these are about as reliable as you can get same one as used in black cabs i also keep a shed full of spares. i also have a understanding wife who loves taking it off road. thing is work out what you want the vehicle to when u bug out ie how many people will be in it, how much gear and supplies, what the roads are like where you live routs you will take to get to where you are going plus what will you use it fir when you get there. the one thing i would say is if you are going for a 4x4 of any make get some training of how to use it because its no good to you when its stuck and you dont know how to get it out

I have a Nissan Navarra D23 Double Cab 2.5d Turbo. SWMBO has a Nissan X-Trail 2.0 Petrol.

I like the Navarra as it is roomy, has the space in the back if needed for a load, good ground clearance, quite a lot of power, reliable, I feel safe in it, it drives nice, is comfortable.

The X-trail for SWMBO for the same above reasons with the addition that I feel happier that she is driving it around as it is safer than a normal car and I know that she can get home if the weather turns bad.

1.8 Petrol Shogun Pinin 4x4, ideal for getting into and out of tight places that bigger 4x4s can get past. I fell in love with small 4x4s after watching some European and Slavik states military get into places successfully that Landies and G Wagons could only dream about. EG many of the cycle reoutes using old closed railway lines are closed off with concrete and steel barriers, but in this area they are just far enough apart to get a Pinin or Jimny through Smile

Citreon Berlingo 1400 petrol, small enough to get down the narrow Devon country lanes and big enough to get lots of stuff in the back, back seats are NEVER up so that gives some good space for tyres, pallets, carpets, bricks, blocks, timber, bags of horse manure,we've had it all in the back.Big Grin

RE: bug out vehicles
I,m new here ,found you talking to my American friend who is stocking up as well,he advised me to join the UK site as he told me I wont survive this chit on my own.
I,m from s-wales 5 mins walk to the local mountain or 1 min on our motorbikes .

I,m into motorbikes due to the fuel and tax insurance on cars, and the fun ! so our bug out will either be a 600 cc ninja or a bmw 1000rs

The ninja is a quick bike to get places and out of trouble but not as reliable as the big old beemer that,ll do 150k ond still keep going with a bit of oil change ,The ninja is loud so its going to attract attention .I,m waying up the pro's and cons then i,m going to fix one of the bikes up ready.

Had a towbar fitted to a big honda trail bike i had with a small trailer on it ,All my own work and it carried some gear on our camping trips,So i,ll put a towbar on one of these when i suss out the best bike for the job.
Both do around 220 miles to 20 quids worth of fuel (full tank)And we also have a 125 4 stroke scooter that,ll do 300 miles on a tank 10 quids worth.

Easy to get out of trouble and light enough to push if I need to keep things quiet.
Need to fit chunky tyres though I recon Big Grin
Something like this to load up the gear and suplies for the main bike

Pics to follow
Here's my ninja that i take off roading now and again

So i,m used to the skill of the tyres on the mud !
Here's the honda with a bit of camo

With trailer on

With all the troubles on the roads when things happen i don't think the cops if they are about would catch me or worry about me with 3 people on my bike heading for the hills, let um try and stop me ,I can get my bikes right out of the way

Nice bikes, both motorcycles and quids definately have a use for many people living towards the edges of towns who need to move people and gear quickly up into the hills, or even to provide transport in the aftermath of a crisis, Wish I still had my XL 250 or my GS750 rat bike.

RE: bug out vehicles
The xl would do the job and easy to throw around gs750 bullet proof madmax mobile
Maybe worth thinking about a small monkey bike to throw in ,they can be put in a boot of a car and go miles on fuel
I,m deff thinking of rating one of them soon with full camo and storage boxes ,There was a diesel ural bike on fleebay i missed the other day goping for a song ,old cooking oil I can get barrels of it as my son in law lives right behind an Indian cooking shop ,And has access to about 4 barrels a week that they throw out .
I,m thinking of storing that as well for back up fuel

I'm actually still grovelling most pathetically to my wife to let me have a Suzuki Van Van 125 to hang off the bank of my Transit Van.
