We went mad and ripped out our gas fire 3 years ago and replaced it with a milti fuel ( coal or wood) stove, you can buy em from about £80 to about £800 from places like Machine mart. Emergency cooking and heating sorted.
For short term emergency light I can use either candles which i have hundreds of, or Light sticks, but eventually I want a pack away PV system for charging a battery to power LED lights
